The labor shortage has perhaps been the most persistent problem plaguing our industry for the last few decades and, with some employees opting not to return after COVID-19 lockdowns, the problem is even worse. In fact, 43% of laboratories are currently operating understaffed, according to LMT’s 2022 Wage Survey.
“We had two employees who reassessed their own plans after COVID; one decided to join the NYPD and another decided to move to another state,” says Isaac Hakimi, President, Streamline Dental Laboratory, Manhattan, NY. “This was more turnover than usual for us and certainly finding good techs is a challenge for all labs—especially during COVID—but luckily we’ve managed to recruit some great new technicians.”
