Subrisi Smile Technology: A DIY Lab from Start to Finish

In 2009, Angelika Oeckl was in a tight spot after the lab where she was working shut down unexpectedly. Instead of looking for another position, she decided to start her own C&B lab, Subrisi Smile Technology in Kirkland, WA.
The first challenge was finding a space that was available immediately. She had customers from the previous lab and wanted to be able to accept their cases. “Other labs open and struggle to find customers; I had the customers and struggled to find the space,” Oeckl says.
Oeckl hired fellow displaced technician Lilla DaRe and, while waiting for legal issues with their preferred location to be resolved, the duo found a small temporary space, about the size of a one-car garage, and moved quickly. They got a rental contract on a Wednesday, painted, bought and assembled IKEA desks for benches, installed air lines, and opened Subrisi—Latin for “smile”—on Monday.
