We recognize that this guidance from the FDA can impact the dental laboratories’ options for providing CAD/CAM abutments and would like to assure all dental professionals that DENTSPLY Implants is a fully FDA-compliant abutment manufacturer. With our ATLANTIS solutions for all major implant systems, we will continue to provide FDA 510(k) cleared abutments on all materials and interfaces to provide peace of mind for dental laboratories, their doctors and the patients they care for – because it matters.
Since 1999, we have manufactured well over 1.5 million abutments globally and respect the need for quality and FDA cleared implant solutions to support reliable, long-term outcomes. We welcome the opportunity to be the provider of choice for patient-specific restorative solutions.
If we can be of additional support to the dental laboratory...

For past six years, Biodenta has worked thoroughly with FDA consultants to offer dental laboratories regulatory compliant ways to manufacture CAD/CAM custom abutments in-house. Rather than clearing a closed system, we have attained FDA 510(k) premarket notification clearance for intent to market final product: custom CAD/CAM titanium and hybrid abutments. Laboratories will be able to produce CAD/CAM custom abutments in compliance with FDA regulations by using Biodenta’s DentaSwiss PreFAB-4 system, after establishing a quality management system fulfilling the QSR requirements, registering as a Biodenta (contract) manufacturer at FDA data base, following Biodenta’s device master record (DMR) and specifications for production, quality check, and labeling. “By offering transparent and university validated CAD/CAM products and solutions, we have become the key dental laboratory industry partner who will support them in achieving their long term goal of regulatory adhering,...
Nobel Biocare has always been and continues to be in full compliance with the FDA regulation and NADL recommendations when producing individualized implant prosthetics. The recent communication from NADL with an important FDA Alert regarding the use of CAD/CAM for in-lab milling of implant abutments does not affect any Nobel Biocare products. Our NobelProcera manufacturing facility in Mahwah, New Jersey is registered as a Medical Device Manufacturer. In addition we have FDA 510(k) clearance on all implants and abutments we currently offer for purchase. We are committed to offering individualized implant prosthetics for a wide range of implant systems that are regulatory compliant and industry leading in quality. For labs that do not work exclusively with NobelProcera, we understand that this news may affect their existing workflows. If that’s the case, we’re here to help. As the pioneer in CAD/CAM dentistry we have over 30 years’ success in CAD/CAM restorations...

The industry is abuzz with questions and concerns about the FDA’s newest statement on in-lab milling of implant abutments (see NADL alert below). Watch for additional coverage in LMT.
From NADL:FDA Alert - Labs not permitted to use CAD/CAM for in-lab milling of most abutments
When FDA began studying the use of CAD/CAM in dental laboratory technology, the FDA’s initial focus was on angulation and the implant/abutment interface. FDA ultimately made clear statements that anyone making the implant/abutment interface is a "manufacturer" as such must obtain 510(k) clearance to do so.
That still did not answer the questions about the “tooth end” of the abutment, the abutment collar/post. Sometime later FDA ultimately stated a dental laboratory may mill the collar/post as long as the dental laboratory follows the manufacturer's FDA cleared instructions.
Now, nearly two years later, there is still only one manufacturer that has obtained FDA clearance for their in-lab CAD/CAM...

In December, Dental Arts Laboratories, Inc. (DAL) celebrated 80 years of service to the dental industry.
Founded in 1934 by Adolph Knueppel, DAL now has 325 employees across 13 facilities in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Missouri. The lab has grown to offer a full range of services—including fixed, removable, implants and snoring/sleep appliances and bruxism/occlusal splints—and two years ago opened DT Technologies to provide subcontracting services and CAD/CAM equipment and materials.
Part of the laboratory’s success is due to its team of dedicated officers who have a long history with the company, including Terry Knueppel, Adolph’s son, who joined DAL in 1960 and recently became Chairman. Bruce Colgin, who was hired as a part-time delivery driver in 1975, later became President and was recently promoted to CEO. Scott Clark—whose dentist-father was one of Adolph’s clients—has been with DAL since 1977, acting as Executive Vice President until...
