Glidewell Laboratories, industry-leading provider of dental laboratory products and services, announced today that production of conventional feldspathic PFMs will cease companywide effective October 1, 2016. All future PFM cases prescribed from the lab will use Obsidian® lithium silicate ceramic in place of feldspathic porcelain.
When compared to conventional PFMs, Obsidian Pressed to Metal crowns and bridges represent a higher standard of care in ceramo-metal restorations. Obsidian lithium silicate ceramic exhibits over four times the flexural strength and two times the chip resistance of traditional porcelains. The material polishes beautifully and is kinder to opposing dentition than previous PFM ceramics. The increased toughness of Obsidian makes it ideal for bridges, cases with insufficient vertical space for full-contour zirconia, and screw-retained restorations.

It is with great sadness that we must share news of the passing of Arlo King, CDT and Director of Technical Services for DENTSPLY Prosthetics. Arlo was well-known, -liked and -respected throughout the dental industry as the face and leader of DENTSPLY's laboratory technical support services. Those who knew Arlo were acutely aware of his love of the trade and strong loyalty to DENTSPLY. It was Arlo's goal to get better so he could get back to work. As he stated it in a recent text message, "I just can't go to work, so I am going to work from home."
Arlo joined DENTSPLY Ceramco in 1992 at the close of his 20-year U.S. Air Force military career. It was in the military where Arlo gained his training as a dental laboratory technician and launched his dental career. On March 24, 2013, the dental industry lost a revered leader, colleague and friend, Norbert Duepner. Norbert joined the Argen family as Technical Director over 27 years ago and leaves in his legacy one of the strongest Technical Support Departments operating in the dental landscape today. Known throughout the industry, Norbert was a highly respected professional who developed relationships with dental laboratories worldwide. Norbert possessed the unique ability to tailor technical solutions to customer needs and approached each call with individualized care and a kind and cheerful demeanor. He was a cornerstone at Argen serving customers until Friday, March 22nd, just short of his 81 birthday.
