ADA Amends Porcelain/Ceramic Definition: What It Means for 3D Printing

As 3D printing equipment and materials continue to evolve in our industry—see this month’s Product Focus starting on page 28 for all the latest materials—the newest development in this arena is that the ADA’s Council on Dental Benefit Programs, which oversees the CDT code manual, is amending the Classification of Materials definition of Porcelain/Ceramic for 2023.
“This amendment deletes ‘pressed, fired, polished or milled’ [from the definition],” explains Frank Pokorny II, MBA, FACD, Senior Manager, ADA Center for Dental Benefits, Coding and Quality Practice Institute. Specifically, here’s the 2023 definition of Porcelain/Ceramic as well as the 2022 one for comparison:
• 2023: “Refers to materials containing predominantly inorganic refractory compounds including porcelains, glasses, ceramics, and glass-ceramics.”
