Strategy Milling is the first milling center in the U.S. to mill full contour gold crowns and bridges. Laboratory customers design the restorations and submit .stl files that are then milled from virtually porosity-free gold alloy pucks. Two alloy formulas are available: 50% Au and 2% Au. Customers pay a milling fee, shipping and only for the alloy used in the final restoration. All cases are shipped to the customer within 24 hours of the file being sent and require minimal despruing, finishing and polishing.
Because of its connection to Atlantic Precious Metal Refining (APMR), Strategy Milling has the unique ability to overcome a major shortcoming of milling technology: material waste. The unused milled gold gets recycled back into gold blocks that are tested to ensure the alloy maintains its integrity.
"We believe that no posterior restoration compares to a noble or high noble gold restoration," says Scott Mappin, Vice President of Operations at Strategy Milling. "After two years of research and development, we can now fill a huge gap in digital dentistry by providing milling capabilities dental professionals won't find anywhere else. Strategy Milling allows us to provide accurate gold restorations with outstanding marginal integrity, all at a very competitive price."
All in the Family
In 1988, Don Mappin founded APMR which he operates with his wife Darlene. His brother, Tom, is V.P of Operations; all are dental technicians. Since 1990, Don's youngest brother, Scott, has held positions at several laboratories, owned his own laboratory and worked for 3M ESPE. While he was working as a trainer at H&O Dental Lab which was a beta test site for Brontes Technology's intraoral scanner—now the Lava C.O.S. available from 3M ESPE—he discovered the exciting potential of digital dentistry.
In 2011, Scott joined APMR and, later that same year, Scott, Don and Darlene began working on the concept of combining digital technology with their refining expertise and developing the proprietary, custom process for manufacturing dimensionally accurate gold pucks.
Now, Strategy Milling is housed in a newly remodeled 6,000-sq-ft secure facility with three Roeders RDX5 Mills and room to expand to 12 or more milling systems. Also onsite is the puck processing facility.
Recently, another family member joined the team: first cousin Mike Mappin, who has a military and computer background. Mike and Scott are responsible for operating the milling center.
