In James Carse's, intriguing book "Finite and Infinite Games," he introduces the theory there are only two games that can be played - Finite Games and Infinite Games. The infinite game has no finish line, and no winner. A finite game, like football has fixed rules. But the infinite game, like knowledge, has no rules.
The more we see through the lens of finite and infinite games, the more we recognize infinite games all around us. For example, there is no such thing as winning in a friendship. You can grow the depth of a friendship over time, but you cannot win a friendship. And same is true for every human relationship, including the one we have with our customers.
And so we have to ask ourselves - what game are we playing, and are we playing the game of business to win? If so, the finite player will always create value for himself first, then for the customer. The infinite player, by contrast makes very different strategic choices, which are deployed not to win, but to stay in the game by growing trust, permission and loyalty. When we play an infinite game with a finite mindset, yes, we will win business, but the investment will be costly, not just monetarily and even more so, emotionally. With market share, at best, only borrowed.
