Seven Strategies to Support Implant-Trained GPs

Getting properly trained in implants isn’t easy for a general dentist; it’s time consuming and expensive. I know: over the past two years, I’ve invested about 120 CE and externship hours earning a fellowship at the Midwest Implant Institute (MII) and have surgically placed about 150 implants.
General dentists are now signing up for training in record numbers. However, I’m concerned they’re being drawn in by an oversimplified view of the specialty; for instance, I’ve heard some educators tell GPs, “If you can drill a hole in wood, you can do implants.” In addition, many training programs only minimally address implant prosthetics.
Consequently, laboratories may be facing even more cases with less-than-ideal implant placement and a client pool that needs a lot of guidance on evaluating the case and planning for the crown, hybrid, overdenture, bar, etc. This is a daunting reality, but it...
