New Overtime Rules Expand Number of Eligible Workers

EDITOR'S NOTE: A federal judge issued a nationwide injunction November 22, blocking an overtime regulation that, as of December 1st, would have qualified millions more Americans for overtime pay. U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant agreed with 21 states and a coalition of business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, ruling that the Department of Labor had exceeded its authority by raising the overtime salary limit so significantly.
Under the new regulations, the salary limit below which workers automatically qualified for overtime pay would rise to $47,476 from $23,660. Some workers whose salaries exceed the threshold would qualify for overtime pay depending on job duties.
The injunction is only a temporary measure that suspends the regulation until the judge can issue a final ruling on the merits. In a statement, the Labor Department said it strongly disagreed with the decision and was considering all legal options,...
