At induDent AG, our milling center in Duisburg, Germany, we’re seeing a tremendous growth in demand for digitally fabricated bite splints. They’ve evolved from a niche product to one of our most important and profitable services.
In part, that’s due to the efficiency of digital manufacturing compared to the analog process but, also, there have been significant developments in digital materials. We’ve had great success with optimill memosplint, a millable thermoelastic disc from dentona AG (now available in the U.S. from Primotec).
The material has a thermoeffect that occurs when the splint is inserted into the patient’s mouth; the body temperature of the mouth makes the splint flexible and yet it doesn’t lose tensile strength or flexural strength. It adapts to the teeth, sits tension free and automatically resets itself after deformation, making the splint very comfortable for the patient.
