Five Key Trends in the Subcontracting Market

Subcontracting work between laboratories has always been part of the fabric of our community,
but the market for these services is growing and more vibrant than ever. Consider these
five significant developments uncovered by LMT’s 2019 Subcontracting Survey.


1. A record number of laboratories are subcontracting work: 86% of laboratory-respondents send work out to be fabricated by other laboratories or manufacturers—compared to less than half of laboratories that did so 20-plus years ago. (See graph for a historical perspective.) Many of these labs say they’ve been sending out more work over the last few years; it represents an average of 20% of their workloads.
