Chairside Experience Inspires Technician to Go to Dental School

Like many technicians, Steven Yoon Shin started working in his father’s lab, Columbia Milling Center and its sister company, Macro Dental Lab, during high school. After a hiatus for college and an engineering job, he returned to the lab in 2018 to handle sales and marketing. “My title is Manager but really, it’s evolved into Jack of All Trades as I learned more about the technical side of the business,” says Shin.
Three months in, he was delivering an implant-supported overdenture to a local doctor and helping to check the retention when he realized the powerful impact dentistry has on the patient’s well-being. “I saw the way a new smile could change patients’ lives and make them so happy and that’s when I knew I wanted to become a dentist,” says Shin.
He just completed his second year at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore and is on track to graduate in 2024. LMT talked to Shin to learn more...
