Artists in Residence: Painting a Picture of Dental Technology

Before emigrating from Cuba, studying dental technology and becoming the owner of MardentProsthetics Dental Lab in Miami, Marcel Fundora was a painter; his artwork appeared in exhibits in New York, Miami and Cuba.
Now he’s combining both his passions, with many of his paintings focused on dentistry. “Dental themes occupy a special place within my art series because these paintings reflect the dental technology work I’ve been doing the last 14 years,” he says. “Being a ceramist fills a great deal of my time and my artwork faithfully records this.”
For example, one of his paintings, Thinking Ahead, combines a close-up view of a mouth and an abstract interpretation of the thoughts, steps, materials and techniques used to create a functional and esthetic smile.
