A Modern-Day Renaissance Man

Owner of T. Panei Dental Lab in Butler, PA, Tom Panei is an accomplished musician and artist and also has two unique niches: painting murals and restoring statues.


He got his start painting murals about two decades ago when he was commissioned to do a 4' x 8' painting and has been doing them ever since. His all-time favorite painting—and largest at 30 feet long—took two months to complete and is a colorful, modern take on Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Several years ago, it was displayed at the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, MI, for Art Prize, an art competition that features 1,700 artists from all over the world; eventually it was purchased by a church.


Working on paintings of this size presents unique challenges, the biggest being the composition. “When you’re working with such a big area, achieving the correct dimensions of the subject matter can be difficult,” says Panei. Another challenge...
