5 Strategies for Running a Leaner, Meaner Laboratory

While operating lean is always optimal, it’s even more so post pandemic. Here, five laboratory operators share their strategies for improving systems, boosting productivity and enhancing cash flow.

1. Offer Discounts for Modeless Cases. This year, John Eggebraten, MDC, CDT, Owner of Oral Esthetics Dental Laboratory, Spokane, WA, began offering a discount for modeless cases: $40 off the first unit and $20 off each additional unit in the case. While just one of his four dentist-clients is taking advantage of the discount, it’s already having a big impact on his operation. “In addition to saving on the cost of materials, we’re saving about one-and-a-half hours of working time by not having to do any model work,” says Eggebraten. “I’m actually making a better profit by offering the discount.”
