To make Lennon’s glasses jut out from the canvas, Carnell used dental wax rings as a structural guide. He poured paint onto the wax, let it harden and used a scalpel and carver to clean and smooth the edges. “I also like to use checkerboards and dots to enhance the 3D look,” says Carnell.

“I use any tools I can get my hands on,” says Carnell. “To give the butterfly wings on Marilyn Monroe a 3D effect, I used lab utility wax to create the wings and covered them in yellow acrylic paint. To achieve the pattern on the wings, I dipped the bottom of a water bottle in black acrylic paint and pressed it onto the canvas.”

To accommodate for future industry changes, Randi and Scott positioned the 3D printing room, shown here, next to the model room. “We know printing is going to continue to grow and as traditional poured models are decreasing in volume for us, this layout is set up to adapt for that growth,” says Scott.
