It’s fascinating to live in a time when everything in the dental world is evolving so fast. Only two decades ago, creating a restoration like this was extremely complex, time-consuming, and required expensive equipment and deep expertise. Today, with the help of 3D scanners, milling systems, modern implant platforms, and advanced materials, such restorations are made faster, stronger, more precise, and far more esthetic.

I’d like to thank designer Bianca Popescu for her outstanding digital design and the excellent zirconia fit. My role was to refine the final esthetics using MiYo colors and surface texture. The zirconia has a flexural strength of 1200 MPa, and the monolithic structure makes this bridge one of the most durable, functional, and visually harmonious solutions available today.

In the dedicated 3D printing room, each of the lab’s 11 printers has an exhaust port that connects to a booster fan that constantly pulls air through the printers, helping to regulate the internal temperature and humidity of the machines. There is also a fume hood over the post-processing area. “It’s such a breath of fresh air compared to our old space; it doesn’t smell like alcohol or resin,” says Chambers.

“I use any tools I can get my hands on,” says Carnell. “To give the butterfly wings on Marilyn Monroe a 3D effect, I used lab utility wax to create the wings and covered them in yellow acrylic paint. To achieve the pattern on the wings, I dipped the bottom of a water bottle in black acrylic paint and pressed it onto the canvas.”

To make Lennon’s glasses jut out from the canvas, Carnell used dental wax rings as a structural guide. He poured paint onto the wax, let it harden and used a scalpel and carver to clean and smooth the edges. “I also like to use checkerboards and dots to enhance the 3D look,” says Carnell.
