Treating a Cleft Palate Using a Two-Phase Approach

Technician’s Statement
This case has a special meaning to me because in the 1960s, my grandfather, Dr. Larry Wright, led cleft palate treatment protocols to new heights in Buffalo, NY. His work and research continue today at the Larry C. Wright Craniofacial wing at Buffalo’s Children’s Hospital and our laboratory continues to specialize in these types of cases. This case takes a deep dive into the initial phase of a cleft palate treatment for a 7-year-old girl. Her palate closed on its own and there was a fear it had fused together which would make expansion more difficult. Our goal was to give her better function for eating and chewing as well as improved hygiene due to the deep vault (see photo below).
