In the February issue of LMT, Aiham Farah, CDT, offers a step-by-step case study demonstrating how to bring monolithic IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime to life using IPS Ivocolor stains and glazes. Here, he shares additional tips on grinding, external shading and characterization.
Grinding Monolithic
Step 1
After sintering, zirconium oxide surfaces tend to have a mirror-like reflective appearance. Because of this, the shade tends to be slightly distorted. To remove the reflective layer and bring out the proper shade, natural progression of shade and translucency of the IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, use a diamond bur grinder lightly over the entire restoration, without applying pressure. For all of these steps, I recommend burs and wheels from Wagner Precision Rotary Instruments.
