The State of Dental Therapy

The field of dental therapy is gaining traction across the country; here’s an update on where this controversial profession stands in the U.S.
More than 56 million people live in areas in the U.S. with dentist shortages, according to Pew Trusts, a non-profit that researches public policy. In some of those areas, dental therapists are attempting to bridge this gap by providing affordable and accessible care to these underserved populations. Considered mid-level providers similar to a physician assistant, dental therapists work under the supervision of dentists and can provide services such as cleanings, simple extractions and fillings.
Here’s the current status of dental therapists nationwide:
- They’re authorized to work in Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico and Vermont.
- In Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Washington, they’re authorized to practice only on tribal lands.
