Technician Hits Strike Zone as Player and Coach

To Wayne Barrett, Manager of the Removables and Sleep Therapy departments at Muth & Mumma Dental Lab/DSG in Harrisburg, PA, there’s no better sound than the crack of a wooden bat making contact with a baseball.
Although Barrett played baseball in high school, he had taken a break from playing for several decades. But in 2013, he heard about the Olde Towne Crusaders, a local over-40 baseball team. “I hesitated about joining the league, but decided not to live by ‘what if,’” he says. “The roster had already been set, but I went to the team anyway and asked if I could help.”
Barrett began throwing pitches for the team’s batting practices and got his chance to play when an injury left them down a player. Just like that, he became a starting pitcher at age 59, playing several games a week in the summer. “I know my window of opportunity is very narrow, so I treasure every moment I’m able to go out and play,”...
