Syrup and Cider and Bowls, Oh My!

Richard Kobbe, Owner of Frederick Dentures & Orthodontics in Frederick, MD, can’t contain his creative spirit in the lab. When he’s not working, he can be found making maple syrup, pressing cider or turning wood bowls.
Kobbe grew up in Pennsylvania, where making syrup and apple cider were family traditions. Syrup-making is a spring-time activity and Kobbe helps his friend Chris Wolfe make about 50-100 gallons each year by boiling maple tree sap in large vats to evaporate excess water, leaving behind the sweet topping.
In the fall, Kobbe and his family get together over a weekend to hand-press apple cider, and produce about 50 gallons each year. He then brings his hobbies full-circle by using some of his homemade syrup as the fermentation agent to turn some of the cider into hard cider.
While he enjoys cider- and syrup-making, Kobbe’s true love is woodturning, where he uses a lathe to shape blocks of wood into bowls, pens and crochet hook handles....
