Status Report: Dental Laboratory Regulation in the Works

A dozen states have laws in place regulating dental laboratories and/or technicians. Currently, two more states and one New York County are actively pursuing legislation while running into the occasional political hiccup. Here’s where things stand:
Washington
The Washington Dental Lab Association (WSDLA), led by President Matthew Chapman, Chapman Dental Laboratory, is proposing the following bill:
- Each laboratory must register with the state and pay an annual fee (amount to be determined after the bill is passed).
- Each laboratory must have a CDT on staff who works at least 30 hours within a two-week period. The CDT doesn’t have to be the lab owner but will be responsible for signing registration documents. Owners who have owned the same lab for 20 or more years are grandfathered in, meaning a CDT on staff is not required but one...
