Shane Velez and Aneeza Hussain—both second-year dental technology students in NYCCT’s Restorative Dentistry program—spent 10 days on a dental mission in Jamaica with Great Shape! Inc., an organization dedicated to providing dental care to the underserved population in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The students worked nine-hour days finishing dentures, taking impressions, pouring acrylic, making repairs and even assisting in oral surgeries.
“We worked with a high volume of patients and made upwards of 28 dentures a day. We’d occasionally run out of water, or the electricity would go out,” says Velez. “We had to be quick on our feet and go with the flow.”
The two worked on a team with three doctors from the U.S.—Drs. John Swearingen, Peter Soderstrom and Steve Prince—at clinics in two neighborhoods in Jamaica, helping patients who were often edentulous and lacking in self-esteem. One particular patient had minimal bone...
