About 10,000 cardiac arrests happen in workplaces each year according to the American Heart Association; this is one reason why a growing number of companies are taking steps to ensure they can help an employee in a crisis. At Albensi Laboratories in Irwin, PA, seven of the lab’s 153 employees are “first responders”; they’re trained in CPR and their names and departments are posted throughout the laboratory so they can be easily located.
Last year, the company took the precautions one step further and rented an automated external defibrillator (AED) for $99 a month. The AED sends an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm, and although the intent is that a first responder would be the one to operate it if necessary, they are designed so that even those with minimal training can use them. “We’re not required to have an AED,...
