Newer versions of cubic zirconia and high-strength glass ceramics are the fastest growing area of ceramics in dentistry. Dr. Ed McLaren compares esthetic and physical properties of some of these new systems, looking at clinical guidelines for choosing high-strength, etchable, glass ceramics or cubic zirconia-based restorations. He also compares esthetic results from CAD/CAM-only processes, CAD/CAM-assisted processes (e.g. machined or printed wax and then pressing technology), CAD/CAM processes enhanced with the addition of surface colorants, and CAD/CAM with the addition of micro-layering in a concept he calls the “digital dental team.”
