Here's the final #DentalDecathlon case! #FeatToFabricate
"As a wholesale chrome lab, we often get caught up in the mundane standard procedure frame. Every once in a while, you get a challenge. This frame proved to be somewhat difficult because of the severe undercut of these lingually inclined teeth. With virtually no buccal undercut, and literally no room for a normal bar or plate, we had to get creative, so we came up with this.
Utilizing the lingual undercut on #20 with a modified T clasp, we gained retention for the partial. Then we encircled the buccal and occlusal with a metal clasp and rest, creating strength as a major connector. This eliminated “food traps” while also providing the support needed. Then, we balanced the LINGUAL undercut of #20 with a LINGUAL retentive clasp on #28 providing good retention overall for the partial. We were able to also gain some slight retention on the mesio-buccal of #22 while “hooking” the guide plane in the mesial undercut #27.
Materials used were Nobilium: Dental lab products, supplies and equipment.'s Nobilstar Ultra, Yellow Stripe investment and Austenal patterns. The case was made early 2007 and is still functioning well today." - Jerry Robinson and the Chromeworks, Inc. team
Chromeworks also posts a Unique Case of the Week at www.chromeworksinc.com. Check it out!"I like this case because of its balance and symmetry. The sparkly pink model treatment was fun and created an interesting effect."
- Alan Smith, CDT, DTG, Fashion Dental Arts Laboratory, Corona del Mar, CA #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate"This was Empress Veneers. Tooth numbers 8 & 9 were press ingots Empress with layering technique. The shade was taken by me with easy shade compact from VITA. This doctor was my client and he was suffering with embarrassing front teeth wear. He let too much time go by to fix it himself so after he started sending me his cases and loved my restorations, he asked me if could do his veneers. He was very impressed with the results."
- Jorge Santa Cruz, Owner of Dental Crafts LLC, Tucson, AZ #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate"I felt that this was probably one of the better cases I have ever completed. This was one stack, 1 minimal contour and a glaze. No add-ons. No corrections. It may seem monochromatic, but we are an in-house lab and this is how our dentists prefer them stacked."
- Cory Ledwitch, J&K Dental Lab, Inc., Janesville, WI #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate — tagged Cory Ledwitch"This is a case that came through the lab a while back from Dr. George W Childress, DMD, PC in LaGrange, GA. It is a 10 unit smile makeover.
When the patient came back in for a recall after seating it a month later, he decided to take some photos and send it in to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry just to see if it was a possible accreditation case. They passed it!
This was such an encouragement to him that he went on to do the other cases necessary for accreditation and gave me an opportunity to do some cases for accreditation with him.
This past AACD meeting Dr. Childress was one of 6 dentists that were accredited at this year's meeting in Toronto.
I am honored to be a part of that since my goal is to "Make the dentists I work for successful."
- Dennis King, CDT, TE, King Dental Arts Studio, Inc. Bristol, TN #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate — tagged Dennis King"This was a photo of a case I did for a dentist in New York. I actually am very proud of the results I achieved as it was my first time working with pink porcelain on a zirconia implant crown over an abutment. The challenge was to achieve the coloring that the doctor provided with a shade tab as well as creating a diastama between the teeth and making it look esthetic. I was really green at this while doing it so this has to be my favorite."
- Vernice Griffin, CDT, Griffin Dental Laboratories, LLC #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate — tagged Vernice Griffin"Why I'm I proud of this case you ask? I've been in the dental business for 33 years and I have never been so completely excited about a certain technique like the BDT technique. It is revolutionary in a broad scope.... It intertwines the best of all worlds... The substructure is Pekkton which is shock absorbing; the perfect marriage for bonding materials, super light weight, completely stable, and very strong. The esthetics are completely controllable and unlimited in the hands of the fabricator "person". The PINK microfilled Anaxdent composite is amazing and enables life likeness of true nature... I believe the BDT technique is second to NONE! This has made my cup over flow with a renewed passion for excellence within comprehensive and complete dentistry."
- Bill (Buzz) Connell DTG,CDT, Paragon Dental Studios, Jupiter, FL #DentalDecathlon #FeatToFabricate"I recently completed this case for a restoring dentist in Little Rock, AR. The patient required metal reinforced implant temp devices fitted into temp abutments. The case needed to be robust enough to last the 2 plus years the patient would be spending overseas."
- Craig L. Nalbone, PhD, MDT; Senior Technical/Surgical Specialist; Carter Dental Lab in Stuttgart, AR"Here is a fun case that was too large for conventional processing. The case was an acrylic partial. My case plan was to fabricate the partial first, fit to a master, then marry to the defect area. The path of insertion was brutal. When satisfied with the fit I waxed the defect and post palatal areas, made a custom silicone mold and used the same manufacturers resin but this time pour resin instead of heat cure. Watching not to warp mold—that’s why I made it so heavy duty—I cured it under pressure repair style. Thanks to the doctor’s accurate impression, it went right in with no adjustments. At recall appointment there were still no problems or adjustments.
After 40 years at the bench, I live for interesting cases to break up the day. This one fit the bill. I’d like to say its unique, however I've done similar cases recently with far worse oral defects. I'd tell young technicians to study a tough case and sleep on it, think totally outside the box, and the solution will become apparent. That and make sure you first duplicate the master model in case you have to try again, etc.”

"I have been doing scanning/designing/milling for four and a half years. We have the Lava Scan ST II scanner by 3MESPE and went to St. Paul for certification back in 2012. We now currently use exocad software with Jensen Dental Preciso as our CAD software. I am proud of this case because I took an old scan and merged it with a STL file that was sent to us.
Digital technology is pretty cool as far as the things you are able to accomplish. I started in the laboratory 10 years ago, learning everything I know about the lab from my father who is the business owner of Bolton Dental Laboratory, Inc.
I LOVE MY JOB and working with digital scanners and designing on a computer is the future of this industry and it makes me smile knowing I can do almost anything with digital technology. It makes my job fun and easy. To create smiles digitally is a pretty amazing thing in the industry and I love what I do as a technician.
This is an upload of a screen shot of a temporary bridge that I designed and uploaded to the doctor for him to print on his 3D printer. I'm sure the patient will be happy to have this in their mouth and want to smile because they can :) " — tagged 5 items3M Oral Care
