Sleep Apnea Diagnoses on the Rise

Between 2014-2017, diagnoses of sleep apnea in rural America increased from 0.2% of all medical claims to 1.98%; in urban America, they rose from 0.13% to 1.24%, according to a study done by FAIR Health, a national, independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing transparency to healthcare costs and health insurance information. The study was based on data from FAIR Health’s database of over 25 billion privately billed healthcare claims.
Other findings from the study:
- Males are much more likely than females to be diagnosed with sleep apnea. Between 2016-2017, males accounted for 65% of sleep apnea claim lines.
- The 51-60 year old age group accounts for 31% of sleep apnea claim lines—the largest share of eight age groups studied.
