“Change, consolidation and new business models are inevitable, but survival, growth and a seat at the table are optional. Your future in the next several years is dependent on what you decide to do,” said Mark Murphy, DDS, in his State of the Industry presentation at the 88th Annual Cal-Lab Meeting. “We have tremendous control over what our role will be in the future. You can’t change the direction of the wind, but you sure can set your sails.”
Other speakers during this year’s meeting offered ideas on exactly how to set those sails. Terry Fine, President of AMG Creative, encouraged attendees to embrace social media as a marketing tool during his presentation, Social Media: Truths, Perceptions and Myths, citing these statistics:
70% of small businesses use Facebook for marketing.
69% of dentists have a Facebook page.
On average, for every eight minutes people spend online, one minute is on Facebook.
The fastest growing demographic group on Twitter is...

LMT's LAB DAY EAST—the largest dental laboratory trade show on the East Coast—was the place to be to research digital technology. This year, of the 93 exhibitors, over 40 companies offered the latest scanners, milling and rapid prototyping machines, wax printers, software, materials and services, allowing attendees to see products up close and personal and comparison shop.
"We're looking to invest in a scanner and milling system—we'll be 'newbies'. Since I own a one-person lab and want to expand, I've been doing a lot of reading and research on new systems but it's key to be able to come to LAB DAY East and see them in person," said David Soto, Accurate Dental, Middletown, NY.
The show—held April 6 at the Grand Hyatt in the heart of Manhattan—also attracted seasoned digital labs that are looking to expand their existing digital portfolio. "Over the past two years, we've switched our clients over to full contour zirconia and now it's 95% of our business,"...

"Our business will continue to change to meet new demands. It's less about the ability to manage change and more about the strength to lead change," said Ivoclar Vivadent's CEO Bob Ganley during his State of the Industry address to the more than 700 attendees at the 87th Annual Cal-Lab Meeting held at the Westin Michigan Avenue.
One development Ganley discussed is the growing irrelevance of geographical barriers due to new technology and the increasing competition between labs because of it. "You must understand who you are and have some kind of identifiable message on how you differentiate yourself. Now that's more important than ever," said Ganley.
In keeping with the meeting's "Winds of Change" theme, many of the other presentations focused on new technologies and adapting to an evolving landscape. Lee Culp, CDT, explained the cultural challenge of going digital in his lecture, Digital Workflow, from Production to Esthetics with Full Contour. The meeting also featured a three-part...

• The Signature Brush Line, manufactured by ceramic brush and accessory company M.P.F., features four brushes developed by and named after Endo, Singh, Pizzi and Vlachopoulos. Each ceramist used his signature brush during his demonstration.
• Inspired by Peter Pizzi, MDT, the Evolution Ceramic Palette features a new, sleek design and comes equipped with a slide-in, retractable, 18-well stain tray and an integrated utility sponge. The ceramic powders stay in optimal working condition thanks to the powder-wetting technology, a combination of a polished glass slab and an absorbent material that pulls water from the reservoir underneath....
