Functional denture impressions are by far the best way to attain the most sincere base adaption. There are several ways to transfer this functional information into the final denture.
Some clinicians...See more use the existing denture already in service and adjusted (some times overly so) for comfort. Using either Hydrocast or GC Coe Comfort tissue conditioner the denture is lined and patient is dismissed to have lunch, dinner, or both to return later or the following day. Upon return the clinician has an auxiliary pour a model using the functionally molded (under mastication and rest) impression which has been attained by using the existing denture as a custom tray.
The model is separated and denture is relined again with GC Coe Comfort or Hydrocast tissue conditioner and patient dismissed until the next appointment. Baseplates, rims, consequent set-up, and fabrication are then completed on functionally molded models.
For relines to existing dentures this technique is used as a way to provide a functionally molded reline impression. In this case a model would be poured BUT NOT separated from the denture and sent on to lab of choice for rebase or reline.
