Two good reads from Quintessence: Fundamentals of color, Shade Matching and Communication in Esthetic Dentistry....and..... Photography in Dentistry, Theory and Techniques in Modern Documentation.
Hi. I wouldn't rely on a photo for shade. For characterization - yes, but not for shade. I do photography professionally on my spare time, and even with my calibrated monitors and Canon 5DmkII camera set on custom white balance, it won't be accurate enough for shade taking IMO.
I use the x-rite to help my custom shades. The pictures are great. I like that I can take the finish restoration and compare to preop.
