Avoid Nightmare On Lab Street: Fall Weather & Your Laboratory
Posted Oct 15, 2013 in Miscellaneous
If you live in a city with similar weather patterns to Louisville, KY, you may also be noticing the seasons are a-changing. What's nice is that we can turn off the A/C and open the windows. Turn on a fan during the day when the sun's out and then grab an extra blanket at night when the sun goes down and we're all set.
While all of this may be spectacular if you are taking advantage of 'perfect football weather', this change of season could be wreaking havoc in your lab. Below are some tips on how you can avoid turning into the Wicked Witch of the West this fall and winter...
Follow recommended water/powder ratios when using both gypsum and investment products. Note: expect a seasonal change in this ratio for phosphate investments to keep correct expansion; this is normal and not a condition of faulty investment.
When storing your gypsum and investment products, make sure the boxes are sealed properly and placed in a temperature-control area (ex: cabinet/drawer).
Look at your investment to see if you require a special liquid that is NOT freeze stable and stock up before fall turns to winter (ex: SLC+ for Whip Mix investments Formula 1, Powercast & Polyvest).
Make sure you are using separate mixing bowls for gypsum and phosphate products, as they are not friends and you may notice gypsum not setting properly if contaminated with phosphate.
Check your bowls to make sure they're clean and in good condition. Worn bowls can result in loss of expansion for your phosphates.
