3D Systems Showcases New Digital Printer and Material
In Chicago, 3D Systems showcased the 2012 model of its ProJet™ MP 3000, an affordable CAD/CAM printer for working models and drill guides. Thanks to a new resolution print head, print modes, support process and material, it produces detailed, esthetic models with a stone-like, matte finish. The same material, VisiJet™ MP200, can be run in a "gloss mode" for drill guides. The company also introduced VisiJet Clear, a new water-clear, biomedical-rated material for fabricating drill guides on the ProJet 6000 using SLA technology.
"We are committed to the continued innovation of digital dental solutions through an open architecture that delivers increased value," said Lee Dockstader, Vice President, Business Development. For more information, visit www.toptobottomdental.com.
If 2011 is any indication, 3Shape isn't slowing down anytime soon. Last year, the company grew by 80% in sales for the U.S.; hired 65 people, including nine in its U.S. office; and filed dozens of U.S. patents.
At LAB DAY, it made two key announcements: its 3Shape TRIOS intraoral digital impression system and a new version of its software will be available by the end of the year. The TRIOS scanner doesn't require the use of spray, captures more than 3,000 2D images per second and the dentist can rest the scanner on the teeth for support as he scans.
The 3Shape Dental System 2013 offers a host of enhancements, including new indications. For instance, for the first time, the software allows users to fabricate full dentures. Users can digitally design, print or mill gingiva, and then place traditional denture teeth. It also has a new orthodontic module, Appliance Designer, that allows you to fabricate nightguards, retainers, splints, surgical bites and more.
The new version features...
Amann Girrbach offers the new Ceramill Motion 2 milling machine during the company's LAB DAY program
The compact hybrid CNC machine combines five-axis milling and grinding technology in both wet and dry applications so laboratories can now dry mill zirconia and wax and wet mill PMMA, temporary materials and composites in-house, as well as wet-grind glass ceramics. The wet grinding option also makes the Ceramill Motion 2 ideal for chairside applications for dental office laboratories. If you missed its debut at LAB DAY, register for a demonstration in your area: visit www.ceramilldemodays.com or call Amann Girrbach at 800-851-3719.
"For the next 20 years, 10,000 people will reach the age of 65 on a daily basis," said Max Sturm, President of Candulor, during a press conference at LAB DAY. "In addition, 12% of all dentures are now implant supported and we expect to see 6.5% growth in this area next year."
To meet this increasing demand and help laboratories fabricate esthetic and functional dentures, the company announced several new removable products, including:
• Bite Fork--an instrument for checking the correct position of the occlusal plane--has been reworked and is now available in a set with four removable vertical pins.
• Tooth Sieve is a time-saving aid for sorting, boiling out and cleaning single teeth.
• Strong, elastic and transparent Silicone Mixing Bowls for acrylic feature a suction cup on the bottom to prevent sliding and come in three sizes.
• New products for dentists, including the Clinical Instrument Set that helps dentists provide the laboratory with necessary denture measurements,...
Based on PowerMILL CAM system, Delcam's 2012 version of the DentMILL CAM can take digital CAD designs from most systems and generate toolpaths for a wide range of machine tools. To meet the needs of implant, geriatric and TMJ patients, Heraeus Kulzer launched its Mondial 8i-5° posterior tooth line. "New indication areas such as implant prosthetics are placing increased demands on the stability, function and esthetics of denture teeth," said Lesley Melvin, Heraeus Laboratory Product Manager. "That's why we've worked so closely with leading technicians to ensure that our Mondial 8i-5° posterior teeth complement our existing Mondial and Mondial i teeth to give dental practices and laboratories a comprehensive denture teeth line that is unsurpassed for its natural appearance, comfort and reliability."
Like Mondial and Mondial i teeth, Mondial 8i-5° posteriors feature Heraeus' NanoPearls® filler material that offers color stability and resistance to fracture, abrasion and plaque. Since the manufacturing process is identical, all three lines can be used in combination.
The key features of the new tooth line are:

Just as the Sirona inLab system celebrates its 10-year anniversary, the company has launched a new version of the software, inLab Software 4.0, that offers a faster, easier user interface. Software enhancements include:
•Multiple restoration design that enables the user to work on as many different restorations--including restorations on opposing arches--as he wants and at the same time.
•Design tools enable you to work directly on the tooth when performing functions such as adding or removing material, rotating or positioning a restoration or expanding or reducing tooth size.
•Intuitive workflow lets the technician know exactly where he is in the design process. At the bottom of the design window, each step is clearly defined, showing the technician the previous, current and next steps.

Nobel Biocare's NobelReplace implants now offer more restorative options with two additions to the line:
NobelReplace Conical Connection (CC) features an internal conical connection designed to preserve marginal bone by minimizing micro-movements and potential micro-leakage. It also withstands higher torque and lateral loading stress, minimizing forces on the retaining screw and prosthetic component. The implant has been designed with an integrated platform shift to increase soft-tissue volume for higher esthetics, is suitable for use with all prefabricated abutments and individualized CAD/CAM NobelProcera Abutments, and has the same prosthetic portfolio as NobelActive with restorative options on both implant and abutment level.
NobelReplace Platform Shift (PS) features built-in platform shifting designed to maximize soft tissue for natural-looking esthetics. The internal tri-channel connection provides tactile feedback for accurate and predictable abutment placement.
LAB DAY Chicago was the official North American launch of Straumann CARES Visual 7.0. This is the first Straumann system built with Dental Wings Open Software (DWOS™) as the core software, the result of a partnership between the two companies formed last year.
"This partnership improves the customer experience and means labs can now invest in a CAD/CAM system without the fear of being locked in to a single manufacturer. This is a completely open system that offers users the flexibility to fabricate CAD/CAM restorations through Straumann's validated workflow or through an external workflow," explains Dr. Sandro Matter, Executive Vice President of Straumann's Prosthetics Business Unit.
For both workflow options, the user scans and designs with the Straumann CARES Scan CS2 scanner and Straumann CARES Visual software. It features a wide range of editing tools, simultaneous design of lower and upper jaw, virtual articulator, mirroring function and automatic proposal and covers indications...

Zhermack's New Dune EcoTech Micro-Sandblasting System Reduces Sand Consumption
Lab Day attendees got the first look at Zhermack's new Dune EcoTech Micro-Sandblasting System. The unit's flow shut-off valves and calibrated nozzles immediately interrupt sand flow when the pedal is released, allowing for controlled sand dosage and a dramatic reduction in sand consumption. The sand recirculating function reprocesses the abrasive materials for roughening procedures and lining removals, so the majority of the remaining sand is recycled and reused, resulting in minimum waste. A double connection that's effective from either side of the machine ensures maximum suction performance and operator safety.
Equipped with a built-in reserve air tank, EcoTech also has a durable, large-capacity plastic chamber (over 25 liters); ergonomically designed handles and nozzles; and powerful, adjustable LED lighting for visibility. It is available in either a two- or three-tank design and carries a two-year warranty....
