The coveted first-place award in Candulor's KunstZahnWerk Competition—known as the Oscars of Removable Prosthetics—went to Skender Ramadani from Zurich. He competed against 38 talented participants from around the world and received €1,500 and the Candulor Award trophy.
In second place was Kornelius Egner from Neu-Ulm, Germany, who received €1,000 and third place went to Torsten Lauenstein from Lehrte, Germany, who took home €500. Winners in the Best Documentation category were Jeongho Jeon from Seoul, South Korea; Kornelius Egner from Neu-Ulm, Germany; and Jack Edwards, MDT, Anaheim, CA.
Participants had to submit a total reconstruction with a full maxillary denture supported on the mucous membrane and a partially removable mandibular restoration with four CAMLOG implants. All work had to be prepared using the Gerber setup method and the Candulor teeth and CAMLOG implant components were provided free of charge. An international jury of experts judged the entries.
"All works were of high quality and each of them would have deserved a prize," said Michael Hammer, Candulor's new CEO, during the IDS press conference announcing the winners.
Candulor is sponsoring its second Candulor North American "Art of Denture" Competition in 2014. The company provides the full patient case—including the appropriate plaster models, denture teeth, implant parts and a detailed patient case history—free of charge. All the entries will be on display at LMT LAB DAY Chicago on February 21-22, 2014, on the LB Promenade at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the show: the grand prize winner in the Best Work Overall category receives the Candulor award trophy and $1,000; second place takes home $750 and third wins $500; additional awards are available for digital and print documentation. Participants will also be added to the "Find a Removable Technician" section on the Candulor website.
"I encourage dental technicians to get involved," said last year's winner Arian Deutsch, Deutsch Dental Arts, Youngtown, AZ. "It's a great way to hone your skills, have some fun and network with your peers. Candulor makes it very easy to participate...just register and get started!"
