Nearly 200 laboratory owners, managers and technicians filled Jensen Dental’s Education Day lecture hall at the Swissôtel in Chicago on February 26 and an additional 200 attendees joined remotely via the streaming live webcast. Now in its 22nd year, attendees saw a stellar lineup including Peter Pizzi, MDT; Don Cornell; Dr. Brian Vence; Steve Anderson; Naoki Aiba, CDT; Adam Mieleszko, MDT; Jungo Endo, RDT; Daniele Capoferri, CDT; Luke Hasegawa, CDT; Skip Carpenter, CDT; and Thomas Sing, MDT.
Presenters explained the “how’s and why’s” behind techniques that technicians can use every day to grow their technical, artistic and business know-how and were on hand to answer attendees’ questions. In addition, clinicians held focused two-hour “master class” workshops during which they shared full contour zirconia customizing tips, esthetic techniques, zirconia layering strategies, photography and shade-taking insight and much more.
If you saw LMT LAB DAY attendees walking around with stickers on their lapels, they were likely competing in Jensen Dental’s new product giveaways. Once an hour, an attendee wearing an Imagine™ sticker was randomly stopped and awarded a can of Jensen’s InSync universal spray glaze, the newest member of the InSync Paste Stain and Glaze product line. It offers a quick application process that allows more units to be completed with less labor, and also eliminates a firing cycle since it’s sprayed directly over set surface stains. The thin, uniform coat preserves surface detail and occlusal anatomy and provides a smooth, glossy, streak-free surface texture after firing that enhances natural esthetics. The glaze can be used on zirconia, lithium disilicate, metal ceramic and titanium restorations.
Two sticker-wearing LAB DAY attendees were also chosen to receive Jensen’s new Imagine Veneering Ceramic Kit, which includes 20 powders, a glaze paste and three liquids...

LMT LAB DAY is always the place for new U.S. product launches and this year didn’t disappoint: attendees got the first look at new lab and intraoral scanners, 3D printers and milling units; digital fabrication materials, such as zirconia for anterior use and PEEK; and solutions for removable prostheses, including some digital fabrication processes.
3D BioCAD introduced the TruMill line of precision wet milling machines. The X550 is a five-axis unit for fabricating copings, bars, zirconia, IPS e.max and abutments in ceramic and metal, and the X440 is a four-axis unit for IPS e.max, PMMA, wax and Lava™ Ultimate. For more information, call 877-TRUE-FIT (878-3348) or visit www.3dbiocad.com.
Axsys Dental Solutions offered a sneak peek at the new Versamill 5XS, an industrial-quality mill with a small footprint that was officially launched at the IDS. The open, five-axis mill can be used for wet or dry machining of wax, zirconia, PMMA, glass ceramic, lithium disilicate,...

LAB DAY 2012 could easily be labeled "The Reinvention Convention." Laboratory owners and managers are more engaged than ever in finding new ways to reinvigorate their businesses
We used to associate CAD/CAM with zirconia but, today, almost any product you want to make can be envisioned through CAD/CAM--whether it's the entire product or part of the product," said Don Cornell, Vice President of Jensen Dental, during his program, Critical Considerations for Integrating a CAD/CAM Strategy, at the 2012 Jensen Education Day event at the Swissôtel. "CAD/CAM is about process; it's no longer about product."
The good news is that the price of the technology is more accessible than ever before; there's an affordable option and system for every need and almost every laboratory.
If you choose to invest in digital technology, be wary of using price as a differentiator. "Don't let buyer mentality take over user mentality, meaning don't believe that if it costs more, it's better," said Greg Harris, a marketing and sales consultant, who presented alongside Cornell. "Evaluate what your customers are buying from you, get the features you need--not all the bells and whistles--and...

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Mark Twain's words—repeated by Dentsply's Chris Clark—appropriately describe the gist of the Cal-Lab Group's 86th annual meeting in Chicago. Or, to use Clark's own words, "The lab market is here to stay.
"There's been a lot of gloom and doom of late, with some saying laboratories are headed for extinction. But this market is viable and strategic, and you provide the dentist with services, partnership, education, technical expertise and a knowledge base that can't be duplicated," said Clark, President and COO of Dentsply, to more than 800 attendees.
Adding to the positive outlook, Clark cited several factors driving growth, including an aging population, new technology, the recognized link between dental health and systemic health, and the ever-growing cosmetic demand. "All-ceramics are growing faster than PFMs, removable partials faster than full dentures, metal-free partials faster than cast frameworks, clear aligners...
