LMT’s 30th annual LAB DAY Chicago—the largest dental laboratory show in North America—was a record-breaker with 3,236 attendees and sold-out exhibit space. For the first time since we moved to a two-day format in 2011, the Exhibit Hall was as flooded on Friday as it was on Saturday!
Packed with energy and enthusiasm, attendees (from 53 countries and 49 states) told us they greatly appreciated the excellent manufacturer-sponsored programs—over 300 concurrent sessions in all—because they focused on practical education and information rather than on pushing product sales.
“I have been coming to LAB DAY since 2008. It’s an exciting place to meet lab technicians from all over the world,” said Mark Urlaub, Owner, Precision Dental, Omaha, NE. “You get to see the latest and greatest technology, meet sales reps, network and earn CE credits. I always learn new tips and tricks at LAB DAY; it’s a great place to perfect your technique!”
More than 40 technicians from D&S Dental Laboratory made the trip to LAB DAY Chicago, most of them riding together on a chartered bus from the lab’s Waunakee, WI location. “We always look forward to LAB DAY Chicago to catch up on industry news and see new, exciting developments from vendors. The education and networking opportunities are especially valuable, with so many knowledgeable people from across the country in one place,” says Travis Zick, President, D&S Dental Laboratory. “Our technicians enjoy talking to exhibitors, visiting with other technicians, and learning a few tips they can bring back and implement in their daily work. For the young technicians, getting outside the lab and seeing the imprint of the industry as a whole is a valuable, eye-opening experience.”
Handler Mfg.’s Kevin Foley (left) and LMT President Judy Fishman congratulate Duane Carlson of Liberty Dental in Jackson, MI, the grand prize winner of Handler’s giveaway who took home the Pro Tech Lite PTL-211 bench. Other winners included: Brian Nagle of Renstrom Dental Studio in MN who won a 52CSU Etcher Catcher and Art Uribe of Precision Dental Castings in Skokie, IL who won a Chicago Bears hoodie.
All day Friday, the LB Promenade was buzzing with LAB DAY attendees trying to get a look at the display of 28 entries in the second North American Art of Denture (KunstZahnWerk®) Competition, sponsored by Ivoclar Vivadent and LMT.
During the Friday afternoon award ceremony, Sarah Anders, Ivoclar Vivadent’s new Senior Vice President of North American Sales, was on hand to congratulate the winners. “The Art of Denture Competition allows us to celebrate the incredible skills of dental technicians from across North America. The winners continue to amaze us with their abilities and creativity,” said Anders.
The first place winner for Best Work Overall, taking home the Candulor award trophy and $1,000, was Bart Hyde, Owner of Hyde Dental Prosthetics in Fallon, NV. Because of increased interest in the competition this year, Hyde had been on the waiting list for a competition kit and received his a month late, after another technician dropped out. He dedicated his win to his...
DWOS LiveLink from Dental Wings made its world premiere at LAB DAY Chicago. This technology enables technicians and dentists to work together in real time to determine the optimal position of the implants in relation to the bone, soft tissue, adjacent and opposing dentition, and the virtual prosthetic design. Any changes made in DWOS CAD software or coDiagnostiX implant planning software is simultaneously updated live in both applications, ensuring that surgical and restorative factors are considered prior to implant placement.
After the positions are established and approved by the dentist, the technician can design custom healing abutments, provisionals and the surgical guide all in the same DWOS CAD session. For more information, call 514-807-8485, ext. 1503, or email email@example.com.

PEEK—poly-ether-ether-ke-tone—was the talk of the IDS in Cologne last year; now, it’s come to the U.S. in the form of the JUVORA Dental Disc made from PEEK sourced directly and exclusively from Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions, a global leader of PEEK biomaterials. Available from JUVORA Inc., the disc received FDA clearance for milling frameworks for complete and partial removable dentures and implant overdentures earlier this year.
“PEEK has had some use historically in dental applications such as abutments and healing caps. However, now with the JUVORA Dental Disc, dental professionals in the U.S. have the ability to use CAD/CAM technology for precision designing PEEK frameworks for removable prostheses,” explained Nicole Czechowski, Business Development Manager, JUVORA Dental Innovations.
The JUVORA Dental Disc is lightweight, biocompatible, radiolucent, highly wear and abrasion resistant, and has elastic properties similar to that of human bone. JUVORA’s...

Datron has launched a new entry-level D5 dental mill that offers a manual puck change and costs about $50,000 less than their standard D5 model. “The unit is ideal for labs that mill mainly titanium products, but don’t require automatic puck changes,” said Robert Murphy, Vice President, noting that the entry-level D5 mill can be upgraded to include the automated puck changer if the lab’s needs change in the future.
The company also showcased its new 5-axis D5 LS milling machine that is equipped with Heindenhain linear scales for applications that demand the utmost accuracy, including large-span titanium and chrome cobalt implant parts. Due to its increased thermal stability, it provides consistent quality, even when there are significant ambient temperature fluctuations. With a repeatability of < 2 μm and an absolute accuracy of ± 5 μm, the D5 LS is the ideal machine for labs and milling centers wishing to produce screwed-retained indications such...
Following an agreement between DENTSPLY Implants and Align Technology, laboratories offering ATLANTIS patient-specific abutments can order them based upon scans from the iTero intraoral scanner starting in the second half of 2014. “Moving forward in this expanding area of digital dentistry, dental scanning is a strategic business opportunity and, more importantly, we are creating added value for our customers and their patients,” said Mikael Sander, Group Vice President ATLANTIS Digital Implant Solutions, DENTSPLY Implants.

B&D introduced ORIGIN® LIVETM Multi Zirconia, pre-shaded, multi-layered discs; each layer mimics the inherent gradations of natural teeth, including chroma, value, incisal effects and translucency. Since there’s no dipping or drying involved, the pre-shaded disks streamline production and are less technique sensitive than the coloring liquid method, according to B&D.
The company also demonstrated its new ORIGIN-Haas 5HD milling machine with improved milling strategies (ORIGIN CAM Plus+ powered by hyperDENT) for fabricating custom abutments, implant bars and implant bridges. The machine offers 2.5-micron repeatable accuracy and processes all types of CAD/CAM materials. Laboratories that purchase an ORIGIN-Haas 5HD are also eligible for discounted pricing on B&D’s materials, including zirconia and coloring liquids.
