When he used to work at a large lab in downtown Louisville, KY, Bennett BecVar, CDT, would dream all week about spending the weekend by the lake. These days, he doesn't have to wait that long: he now lives--and works--on the lake in Borden, IN, and can enjoy it at a moment's notice.
Without having to commute or necessarily work a set schedule, BecVar is able to fully take advantage of the natural oasis out his back door. "I can take a walk with the dogs, go fishing or swimming, and then get right back to my cases," says BecVar who also makes time to play in a tennis league and take painting classes. "I love nature and am inspired by it. I have a camera with me most of the time."
As you might imagine, time management is even more important with this view out his window. "There's a constant temptation to do something outside rather than stay inside and work," he says. "But I'm always mindful that the more time I take away from the lab during the day, the more I'll have to work at night. I do end up working many hours, but at least I'm in control of my own schedule."
